Leave about 18 in of floor around a living-room rug, so a 12 × 15 ft room takes a 9 × 12 ft rug. A queen bed takes 8 × 10 ft and a king 9 × 12 ft.

The rules the calculator uses
- Living room: leave about 18 in of bare floor around the rug (designers use 12–24 in), and run the rug at least 6 in past each end of the sofa (Wayfair).
- Bedroom: 8 × 10 ft for a queen and 9 × 12 ft for a king, under the lower two-thirds of the bed (Wayfair). For the whole bed on the rug, allow at least 18–24 in past the sides and foot.
- Dining room: at least 24 in (and up to 36 in) past every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out (Wayfair).

What size rug for a living room?
For a 12 × 15 ft room, a 9 × 12 ft rug leaves about 18 in of floor around it. Most living rooms take 8 × 10 or 9 × 12 ft.
What size rug for a queen bed?
8 × 10 ft, turned crosswise under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it shows on both sides. For the whole bed on the rug, 9 × 12 ft.
What size rug for a king bed?
9 × 12 ft under the lower two-thirds of the bed; 10 × 14 ft to put the whole bed on the rug.
What size rug under a dining table?
At least 24 in bigger than the table on every side: a 6-seat table of 72 × 40 in needs an 8 × 10 ft rug.
Should the sofa sit on the rug?
Either all the furniture on the rug or just the front legs. With the sofa on it, the rug should run at least 6 in past each end.
What are the standard rug sizes?
In the US: 2 × 3, 3 × 5, 4 × 6, 5 × 7, 5 × 8, 6 × 9, 8 × 10, 9 × 12, 10 × 14 and 12 × 15 ft. Sizes vary by a few inches between brands.
