Answer
How much does a gallon of paint cover?
About 350 to 400 sq ft per coat on smooth, primed walls, according to Sherwin-Williams: roughly the walls of a 10 × 10 ft room, one coat.
Coverage by paint amount
| Amount | Covers |
|---|---|
| 1 quart | 90–100 sq ft |
| 1 gallon | 350–400 sq ft |
| 5 gallons | 1,750–2,000 sq ft |
What reduces coverage
Textured or porous walls, bare drywall, a big change of color (especially to a light color over dark) and rolling paint on thinly all mean more paint. Primer first helps.
More questions
How many coats do I need?
Two for most walls; a third or a primer coat for big color changes.
Does paint-and-primer in one cover more?
It can hide better, but coverage per gallon is set by the label; check it.
